The Ostrich Feather Course
We have a nine-hole golf course surrounding the school, which was named The Ostrich Feather Course in 2000. Its close proximity allows pupils to nip out for a quick couple of holes in their free time, or to have a more leisurely round on the weekends.
Cottesmore Golf and Country Club
Cottesmore Golf and Country Club is next door to the school and proves a very useful resource for the keen golfer. Our team often play home matches on the big course, adding a little gravitas and professionalism to the occasion.
The Driving Range
There is also a driving range just outside the front gates of the drive, which we use in the winter when it is too dark to play on the course.
The professionals at the club come over five times a week to coach those who sign up at the beginning of term.
There is tight network of schools who play golf and our thriving golf team, represent Cottesmore in matches against other schools in the district.
There are regular and highly popular family competitions, such as the Family Foursome's in the Winter Term and the Fathers and Son's competition in the Easter Term.
Any pupils can sign up for a golf 'activity' on Wednesdays and Saturday afternoons. This is an informal, but organised time to practise with the master in charge of golf.
A poem on golf, by John Betjeman
How straight it flew, how long it flew,
It clear'd the rutty track
And soaring, disappeared from view
Beyond the bunker's back -
A glorious, sailing, bounding drive
That made me glad I was alive.
And down the fairway, far along
It glowed a lonely white;
I played an iron sure and strong
And clipp'd it out of sight,
And spite of grassy banks between
I knew I'd find it on the green.
And so I did. It lay content
Two paces from the pin;
A steady putt and then it went
Oh, most surely in.
The very turf rejoiced to see
That quite unprecedented three.
Ah! Seaweed smells from sandy caves
And thyme and mist in whiffs,
In-coming tide, Atlantic waves
Slapping the sunny cliffs,
Lark song and sea sounds in the air
And splendour, splendour everywhere.
