Newsletter - Winter Term, 22.11.17

The plans and rehearsals for our play ‘The Lion King’ are coming to fruition and the first performance is just a week away! Over in the Pre-prep rehearsals are under way for their Nativity play, so Christmas is very much on their minds already. It won’t be long before our Christmas tree takes its usual place in the hall, with its twinkling lights adding to the growing festive atmosphere.
Academic News
The 5th and 6th have completed their trial and scholarship examinations as well as completing their corrections. They now have three clear weeks before the end of term. Those who are known as ‘short dated scholars’ — that is, those whose scholarship exams fall in the Easter, rather the summer term — will have a huge amount of revision to do over the four-week Christmas break.  Old Cottesmorian Vasilisa, who won a scholarship to Downe House last year confessed when she returned to see us that she had in fact undertaken some revision on Christmas Day! The rest of the school are in the process of receiving their results and undertaking their corrections.
Mr Butler led the 4th form on a trip to Hastings earlier this week to augment their studies and we look forward to their news soon.
Sports Round Up
Rugby coaching
The boys continue to improve their skills and refresh themselves on the laws. Many haven’t played since last February, but the club players, Barney in Colts and Sam and Harry in the 1st team, are bringing in their expertise and knowledge too.
At the top end this year we have Mr Will, who was capped by England at U16 and U18.  He brings his considerable skill set to coaching and is also a marvellous role model for the boys.
Good luck to all our teams for this week’s fixtures!
Pre-prep news
Christmas activities and Nativity rehearsals are going well. — the excitement is certainly building! The children are working hard to create a polished performance of the Nativity at 2.00 pm in the Hall on Friday 8th December.
Mrs Baker and the team are delighted that the performance will be filmed by Flower Bed Studios again this year, with copies available for purchase your own copy on DVD. Order forms will be in book bags next week.
The response to the shoe box appeal has been amazing, with 29 boxes making their way to Albania in time for Christmas. In addition, over £60 was raised for Children in Need. Well done Pre-prep!
Tuesday 12th December is going to be a very special day, as the whole of the Pre-prep will be going to see Jack and the Beanstalk in Horsham in the morning and having their Christmas party lunch afterwards.
Here’s the latest class news:
The Reception class is continuing their topic of Fairy Tales by acting out Little Red Riding Hood and The Three Billy Goats Gruff. In Art they have had great fun painting some scenery for the Three Billy Goats Gruff and creating new ‘goodies’ and ‘baddies’.  In Maths the children will be learning all about coins, comparing their appearance and values.
Year 1
Writing about the Christmas story continues this week and Year 1 will be thinking about the shepherds, as well as a Christmas adventure. In Maths Year 1 will be working on describing words for direction and position, and using coordinates. They will also work with some measuring using non-standard measurement. Christmas Art and Craft will continue by creating a display of The Nativity.
Year 2
The Big Bad Wolf posters will be completed this week and Year 2 will also read a variety of alternative fairytales, before planning their own. In Maths they will complete their ordinal numbers work, adding and subtracting multiples of 10 and near multiples of 10. In Science the children will predict what will happen to boiled eggs (to represent teeth) in various liquids. In Geography, they will label a map of the UK and a map of the world using an atlas. Year 2 and Year 3 will have Forest School this week and they will continue their Nativity rehearsals. They will also begin their Christmas crafts.
Year 3
During their English sessions this week Year 3 will continue to study the Owl and the Pussy Cat, analysing its rhyming scheme and then writing their own version of the poem. In their Maths lessons their focus is time; they will first explore and compare measurements of time and will then practise reading the time when displayed on analogue and Roman numeral clock faces. In Science the children will begin their topic of forces and magnets. This week they will explore what forces are and notice that some forces need contact between two objects. During their History lesson Year 3 will explore what people did to keep safe during World War II, focusing in particular on the evacuation of children to the countryside. The focus of their RS session will be Christmas around the world. During their Art sessions the children will begin to sew snowmen.
Sunday Fundays
The eagerly-anticipated annual Christmas ice skating trip takes place this Sunday at the ice rink in front of the Royal Pavilion, Brighton. This beautiful and atmospheric backdrop has been quoted by the Independent newspaper: “must win hands-down for atmosphere”.  We’re looking forward to hearing about their Bunny Hops and Crossovers!
The senior pupils will be deep in rehearsals for our play ‘The Lion King’, telling the story of Simba’s epic journey as he seeks to fulfil his destiny as King of the Pridelands.  Performances to parents and guests will be on Friday December 1st and Saturday December 2nd, prior to the exeat.
Dorm Doings
Dorm Monitors will be having a stay-up later this week to thank them for their efforts upstairs.
