Newsletter - Winter Term, 08.09.17

Trunks and tuck boxes, teddies and timetables are all in evidence as the new school year begins.  As well as welcoming our returning pupils and catching up on their news, we extend a very warm welcome to almost 40 new pupils in both the Prep and Pre-prep. We are confident that they will settle happily and quickly into Cottesmore life, with the staff and current pupils always on hand to smooth their path, especially in these early days.

Prior to the start of the term our staff undertook comprehensive INSET training (including First Aid), departmental and staff meetings have been held and everyone is raring to go as the new term gets under way.

As always, the term ahead is packed with learning, sport and activities, along with plenty of opportunities to relax and have fun.  As well as their classroom learning Cottesmorians will experience a range of field trips across a number of subjects to extend their studies, take part in a Maths Challenge and visit the theatre, both locally and in London’s West End. Our senior pupils will take part in a sculpture and print workshop at the acclaimed Watts Gallery.

Guest speakers will enhance the pupils’ knowledge base and we also look forward to a World Aware Evening, as well as a visit from the Norfolk Book Centre, with the popular and knowledgeable Mrs Marilyn Brocklehurst at the helm.

Our chapel remains central to Cottesmore life; we will celebrate Harvest Festival and pay our respects on Remembrance Sunday. It’s also the setting for a short service to begin each day. We’re always pleased to meet new and returning preachers to Chapel for our regular Sunday evensong services.

The already extensive sporting fixture list is augmented this term with the additions of lacrosse and girls’ soccer. Boys’ soccer, rugby, girls’ hockey, netball matches and real tennis all feature too, as well as a number of swimming galas and soccer tournaments.  We hope for an Indian summer’s day to enjoy the annual Golf Family Foursomes event, held on our Ostrich Feather course.

Relaxation is of course important too and Cottesmorians can choose from a wide selection of hobbies and activities. There will also be regular Sunday outings to a variety of local destinations.

Later in the term we look forward to our highly-anticipated play; details are always kept secret at this stage, but watch this space! There will be thrills on Bonfire Night and as December approaches the Christmas tree will weave its special magic over the hall. Our candlelight carol service will add to the mounting festive fervour and, according to tradition, the excitement of our school Christmas celebration The Feast will round off the term.

There’s a packed and productive term in front of us and all Cottesmorians — and their parents — may be confident that every pupil will be supported and guided in their endeavours in every area of school life by the dedication and professionalism of the entire staff.

Academic News

Staff News
We extend a warm welcome to our new Head of English Miss Amy Flower, who is also Form 2’s tutor.

Pre-prep
The Pre-prep pupils are as ever full of beans and raring to go for another term packed with exciting topics of study as well as learning-related activities and outings. They will perform their Nativity play towards the end of the term and will also have their own Harvest Festival assembly. Their term rounds off with the always-popular trip to the pantomime.

Other News
The first Open Morning of this academic year will be held on Saturday 30th September from 1000 to 12 noon and a cordial invitation is extended to everyone who is considering their son or daughter’s education. It’s a marvellous opportunity to see the school at work and discover the vibrant Cottesmore ethos.

Charity Support
Once again we will be supporting Jeans for Genes day. This annual event raises much-needed funds for children suffering from life-altering genetic conditions. The children love to swap their uniform for jeans – and to see their teachers supporting the charity too!
