Academic News

Arts Week

Another highly successful Arts Week concluded on Thursday with the Set Music competition, in which selected instrumentalists performed from each Set, while each Set performed their own Set Song.

A packed and very varied week has enabled pupils to experience many diverse activities across the spectrum of the Arts. These have included: plays in Latin and French, a Shakespeare workshop and drama workshops. In Art they have been fabric painting, creating mosaics and sand sculptures as well as re-creating the styles of the Pointillists and Abstract Expressionists. They have also been designing board games, building castles and making jigsaws as well as many more activities.   A particular highlight was a talk on Apache Art with an exhibition of the ethnic clothing handed down from one generation to the next and explaining the significance of art in clothing.

French Trip

The 3rd and 4th Forms left school very early last Friday for their week-long trip to St Brieuc, near St Malo in Brittany.

Some highlights of their trip so far include a visit to the oyster beds at Cancale, sketching en plein air,  a visit to a cidrerie where they sampled organic apple juice and of course the obligatory visit to the hypermarket. They will also visit a Gaulois village, the Cité des Télécoms and find out about the history and walled fortifications of St Malo.

Sports News

Cricket

Cottesmore hosted the Cricket Six-A-Side Competition on June 20th and won every match in a competition which included teams from Copthorne, Windlesham, Cranleigh and Skipper's Hill.

2 fixtures which survived the weather day on Wednesday 22nd were the 1st XI & Colts A, who both won away at Dorset House with Tobias scoring 54 not out for the 1sts.

Fathers v Masters Match

The Fathers vs Masters cricket match survived the vagaries of the weather, with the parents going in to bat first. Three wickets fell quickly, but a Millard and Stokoe partnership settled the score at 110.
The Masters had to pull out all the stops, finishing with a score of 106. Congratulations to the Fathers!

Tennis

Three trips were made to Wimbledon during the first week of the championship. On Monday’s opening day we had seats on court 2 as well as a pair of tickets for both Centre Court and Court 1. There was also an opportunity to see the show courts. Despite disruptions caused by the rain, the children have had a series of superb days out and have been enthused to improve their tennis. Thanks go to Mrs Dolman for organising the tickets and the trips.

The boys’ team match v Ashdown was won very comfortably by 6 sets to 0, playing a best of three set match.

The 'In House' tennis competitions are drawing to a close with the finals scheduled for the last Monday of term.

Athletics

Congratulations to Jasmine, Alex and Triumph, who have all gained places in the National Athletics Finals in Birmingham on Monday July 4th.   In the qualifying heats Jasmine finished 3rd in the 100m; Triumph gained 3rd place in the 200m, while Alex came 1st in the 100m at 12.25 seconds and also 1st in Triple Jump at 9.88m.
